511 Ohioans Honored, 17 from the City of Oberlin Recognized for their Service

COLUMBUS— The Ohio House of Representatives voted today to pass House Resolution 297 (H.R. 297).  This resolution would honor the 511 African-American Ohioans who enlisted in the 54th and 55th Regiments of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.

State Representative Dan Ramos (D-Lorain), a cosponsor to this resolution, voted in favor Tuesday. Following the vote Rep. Ramos said, “It is an honor to have had the opportunity to demonstrate our profound appreciation for those who put at risk their lives to move our state, and our country, forward to a land more free, more equitable and more just. The families of those who volunteered need not be reminded of the sacrifices these 511 individuals made, and the actions taken by the House today are evidence that those whose families did not volunteer still appreciate and commend the service of these brave Ohioans.”

The 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry served with honor in South Carolina in the Assault on Fort Wagner, the Battle of Honey Hill, and the Battle of Boykin’s Mills, and in Florida in the Battle of Oolustee.  Corporal Henry F. Peal of Oberlin served with the 54th Regiment and received the Gillmore Medal for his bravery in carrying the flag during the Assault on Fort Wagner.
