El Centro de Servicios Sociales had their official groundbreaking Thursday.  The event marked the beginning of the renovation for their new headquarters, which is scheduled to open in November.

The current location on Pearl Ave. in Lorain is too small, so the community services group needs to move to a larger facility.

El Centro has made it their goal to raise the money needed for renovations without a loan or financing.

“It is our goal to raise the money without barrowing,” said Victor Leandry, executive director of El Centro.

The estimated cost of renovation for the building located on East 31st St. is $1.2 million and El Centro has raised over $1 million thus far.

Though El Centro is perceived to help those in the Hispanic community Leandry said they serve everyone.

“What people don’t know is, the largest population we serve is African – American,” said Leandry.  “Our board has more African – Americans than Hispanics.”
