LORIN — Friday, Oct 1 El Centro de servicios sociales, a non-profit social services organization in Lorain hosted “Capital Campaign Kickoff” in an effort to raise funds for not only to serve the community, but to fully renovate their future home.
According to Victor Leandry, El Centro has approximately $1.1 million and needs $1.5 million to begin serving from their new home on 2800 Pearl Avenue.
The fundraiser had a very festive atmosphere, complete with face painting, clowns, and child games. Free food and drinks were also available, along with traditional Puerto Rican food.
During the event, local businesses and organizations donated to the campaign, including PNC Bank – recently bought out Nationwide – Firstmerit Bank, Lorain National Bank, the Mexican Mutual Society, and the Coalition for Hispanic/Latino Issues and Progress.
Local families also donated.
“I am very grateful for all El Centro has done for my family,” said a member of the Flores family.
In attendance were members of Lorain City Council and administration, as well as local organization leaders from the Lorain County Hispanic Fund and the Ohio Hispanic/Latino Affairs Commission.
In a meeting this week, Margarita Quinones, board President Angie Martinez and board members Francisco Hernandez, Isabel Pallens and Mary Santiago, and Executive Director Victor Leandry have made a conscious effort to raise funds through donations as opposed to financing.
Leandry stressed he is very proud of the work done so far and is happy El Centro has come so far in its campaign without financing.
