Age: 17 (will turn 18 on June 29, the day after the festival)

Parents: Carol Mosely and Mark Jones

High school: Southview

Future plans: Will attend the University of Toledo 2009-2010. “I plan on going to college and study in pre med to become either a pediatrician or surgeon.”

Costume: “My dress is from Ghana and is made of Kente cloth. The design on the dress is called ‘FAWOHODIE’ which means independence, freedom and emancipation. Green represents planting, harvesting and spiritual growth. Black means maturation and intensified spiritual energy. Blue means peacefulness, harmony and love. White means purification and festive occasions.”

Roots: “My dad, stepdad and stepmom are African American and my biological mom is Puerto Rican.”

Favorite ethnic food: barbecue chicken, ribs, yams and sweet potato pie

Favorite musician: Panic at the Disco

Favorite book: Harry Potter series

Favorite movie: “Dirty Dancing”

A message from Marissa: “I’m proud to be an African American, and I love my family’s heritage. Furthermore I’d like to say ‘Go Obama! Congrats on being our first African American president.’ “
